This Jets trend may be coming to an end

The Jets used their first-round pick on a defensive lineman a year ago. Though Quinnen Williams, taken No. 3 overall, did not have a dominant rookie season, the Jets remain encouraged about his potential.

With Williams leading the way, the Jets have a pretty deep defensive line and it seems unlikely they would use a draft pick on one. However, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams showed last season that he likes to rotate players on the defensive line, so perhaps they draft one late for some depth.

At the moment, they have Williams, Steve McLendon, Henry Anderson, Folorunso Fatukasi, Kyle Phillips and Nathan Shepherd on the line. That is a strong six-pack of D-linemen, who have all had good moments over the past two seasons.

It would be unusual if the Jets do not take any players at this position. Since 2011, there has been only one year they did not draft a defensive lineman — 2016.

For much of the last decade, it has been a position they have concentrated on in the draft to the detriment of other positions. They used first-round picks on Muhammad Wilkerson (2011), Quinton Coples (2012), Sheldon Richardson (2013), Leonard Williams (2015) and then Quinnen Williams last year.

Amazingly, only Quinnen Williams remains on the team from that group. Much will be expected of Williams in Year 2. Gregg Williams repeatedly praised him as a rookie last year for his ability to play different positions along the line, but he was not an impact player.

If Quinnen Williams does not develop more in 2020, then the Jets could be looking at this position more closely in 2021. For this year, though, I think the Jets will stand pat with what they have on the roster.
